Background: Dementia, is a progressive disease that is common in elderly, but can be slowed by pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapy. Several non-pharmacological therapies such as a healthy diet can provide a safe, cost-effective and practical approach to reducing cognitive decline in the elderly. The MIND diet (Mediterranean-DASH diet intervention for neuro-degenerative delay) is one of the new diet methods developed for general health, both for the heart, brain, and other important organs. This study wanted to find out the relationship between the MIND diet and the cognitive function of the elderly group.

Methods: A structured search was conducted through the evidence search engines PubMed, Cochrane Library, EBSCO, Science Direct and Google Scholar with relevant keywords to clinical questions to obtain eligible result.

Results: There is one systematic review that looked the relationship between the MIND Diet and cognitive function in the elderly. From assessment of validity, the study clearly states objectives and question, used relevant keywords and included studies were rated as good quality and not show drop-out rates. Assessment of importance in each study design demonstrated positive association between the MIND diet and cognitive function in the elderly. The results of the study showed the positive relationship of MIND Diet and cognitive function.

Conclusion: This systematic review use credible method and has good validity. The result answered question, there is positive relationship, MIND Diet can enhance cognitive abilities in elderly. MIND Diet can be implemented as intervention for treating or preventing dementia in elderly, which is more effective and safe. Further large-scale trials of MIND Diet are needed to determine causal links between diet and brain health.
